Sim-Consec™: A new frontier in interpreting?

by Maha El-Metwally

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERASimultaneous and consecutive interpreting are two different modes of interpreting. The former entails concurrently interpreting a speech while the speaker talks while the latter entails taking notes of the speaker’s speech and rendering it in the target language when the speaker pauses. The idea of Sim-consec™ is to use technology to record the speaker’s speech then interpret it simultaneously when the speaker pauses which means the interpreter doesn’t miss a beat. How this method, which I believe was developed in the US, exactly works is what I’ve learnt last summer during the FIT congress in a workshop run by Ms Esther Navarro-Hall. I have already successfully used this method in my work and I am eager to spread the word! I will come equipped with the technology for the participants to try it for themselves in this hands-on presentation.
