It’s not what you spend, it’s the way that you spend it

To move forward, you need to invest. But marketing and CPD cost money. And what if you really don’t have the necessary funds? Translators have a reputation for frugality but is that the only alternative?

I’m going to explore this topic with a workshop based around investment, both monetary and non-monetary.

I’ll start by sharing my experience of moving from general translator to specialist translator with very little cash to spare. I’ll explain what I considered non-negotiable expenses, and why, and then give some examples of how I used more creative ways, some inexpensive and some totally free, to develop my skills, raise my profile and market myself both inside and outside the profession.

In small groups, attendees will then discuss what they consider to be non-negotiable expenses and list some of the alternative solutions they have used – and perhaps new ideas they have – for marketing their services and developing their skills, before reporting back for a final discussion.

I think that translators and interpreters at any stage of their career would welcome the opportunity to evaluate their outgoings and pick up new ideas, but the workshop will be of particular interest to those who want to move forward but don’t think they have the time or money to do so.
