Meet the delegates - Hannah Rayner (Woking, UK)

Hannah RaynerHello, I’m the Head of Translation Operations at Surrey Translation Bureau. I’m responsible for managing the in-house translation and project management teams and the day-to-day running of operations at our office in Farnham.

I first joined Surrey Translation Bureau as a project manager straight out of an MA in Italian Translation and Linguistics in August 2009 and haven’t looked back since! Like others applying for project management roles, I thought it would be a first step into the industry, from which I would move on when I had gained some experience.  In reality, I found project management incredibly rewarding and loved the interaction it gave me with all stages of the translation process. As a small, family-owned business we’ve also always had a lot of flexibility, which has kept our clients and freelancers happy, which makes me happy! Unfortunately I don’t have time for translation at work, but I am lucky to also be able to take on freelance tasks in my free time to keep my translation skills up.

Having been working in the industry for over 5 years now, I really enjoy being able to give feedback to new starters in the industry. Surrey Translation Bureau is currently heavily invested in a university programme that focuses on helping students gain experience through internships and university-based talks. We also have a tailored feedback system and different assessment criteria for industry newcomers that recognises and builds on their potential as we know how difficult it is to break into the freelance world without any experience.

As well as my MA, I hold a BA in French and Italian, I’m a Trados certified translator and project manager and also an Associate Member of the Institute of Translation & Interpreting. Outside of work, I love going out for dinner, hanging out with my cat and watching really geeky TV, like The Great British Sewing Bee! Please feel free to come and chat to me at Surrey Translation Bureau’s stand at the conference .
