Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)
The world lost three percent of its total forest area from 1990 to 2005. Deforestation continues at an alarming rate of 13 million hectares every year and is commonly associated with biodiversity loss, human rights abuse, tax evasion and climate change. FSC is tackling these issues through the recognition of forests’ long-term values. It uses the market in certified forest products to drive social and environmental change in forest management. FSC’s global certification system unites leading conservation and social organizations and some of the world’s largest forest product companies with a common goal: to promote responsible management of the world’s forests. To meet this challenging goal with only 30 staff at the international level, the dedicated team must empower its decentralized network of national representatives and partners – FSC’s face and force. Equitable participation and transparency are critical for FSC’s system to remain credible and dynamic. Communication is essential. To meaningfully engage with key stakeholders, language plays a vital role in making FSC accessible and inspiring – to drive change around the world. In this presentation, Katerina Germanis will convey the global spread and significance of FSC’s work and the vital role that translation plays in its effectiveness.
