Dr Ellen MoermanDr. Ellen Ruth Moerman was born in Amsterdam, grew up in Indonesia and read French Language and Literature as well as English and Linguistics at Université Paul Valéry (Montpellier) from which she later obtained her European Doctorate in Classical French Literature and Philosophy with a thesis entitled L’abbé Prévost traducteur, ou la tyrannie du bon goût. Having obtained her postgraduate Diploma in Legal Translation from the Polytechnic of Central London in 1978, she specialised in legal translation and interpreting. She was called to the Bar in 1998. She continues to interpret both in conference and court settings, to translate and to assist in training linguists and lawyers in multi-lingual legal proceedings. She is a member of the Histoire de la traduction en langue française project where, apart from the inevitable literary contributions, she is responsible for the chapter on scientific and technical translation in the 17th and 18th centuries.
